The two-story performance hall.

The ultimate in cool California living is best seen in The Contrapuntal House, a circa-1935 cozy Brentwood residence recently listed for $7 million.

Sellers of this renovated historic home are Alan Kay, known as the father of the personal computer who envisioned a small computing system in the 1970s and has gone onto become a successful computer scientist, and his wife Bonnie MacBird, a celebrated novelist and screenwriter who wrote the original screenplay for TRON. The home was first built in 1935 by renowned architect John Byers and has been lovingly restored over the years resulting in a contemporary, yet warm Southern California home.

The 8,000-book library with a secret room.

Situated on half an acre, the 5,400-square-foot home has four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The home feels extra spacious thanks to open-plan living areas, like a large living room with soaring beamed ceilings and skylights and doors that open onto the lush patio spaces. There’s a dining room with a wall of French doors and a sleek gallery space for intimate entertaining.

Just off the living areas is a gourmet country-style kitchen that is flooded with natural light thanks to many windows and skylights. From the kitchen there are beautiful garden and pool views so nature is never too far away.

The meditation and massage room.

One of the most prominent features is the five-room primary suite, a sanctuary of its own with a beautiful bathroom, featuring a tiled soaking tub and walk-in shower, plus a gym—seen with a Pilates machine—and French Orangerie details. The bedroom has high ceilings, a marble fireplace, and a large-walk-in closet.

The lit tennis court.

The home keeps wellness at the forefront and a Japanese Zen-style room was designed for meditation and relaxation with a dedicated meditation area and massage table with a door overlooking the gardens. This is also connected to the primary suite. There’s also three additional bedrooms in this house, a rec room, office, and a detached guest house with a bedroom. There’s even art storage dedicated to collectors or those who like to keep their special pieces of art safe.

The primary suite.

The pièce de résistance of the home is the two-story concert hall and library. The Contrapuntal House features a replica of the Contrapuntal Performance Hall, a performance theater in Los Angeles. The home’s two-story concert hall is a meticulously designed performance space with professional acoustics and has hosted luminaries from the music, literary, computer, art, and entertainment worlds.

The pool.

It features a dining and entertainment area and a dance floor. On the upper level is the custom-designed library that can hold over 8,000 books. It’s every book worm’s dream; there are reading alcoves and even a secret bookcase door within the library that connects to what can be transformed into a children’s playroom or art storage area.

The primary bathroom with a Pilates studio.

The outdoor oasis features a lit tennis court, a kidney-shaped pool, al fresco dining areas, and immaculate landscaping with sycamores, avocado and fruit trees, and a magnificent rose garden. Brentwood is just a few minutes from upscale shopping, fabulous restaurants, and entertainment.
